The larger the contact surface between the auscultation head (chest piece )and the body, the better the sound effect. However, there is an arc on the surface of the human body. If the chest is too large, the auditory head (chest piece) can not fully contact the human body, and the sound can not be picked up well, but leak out from the gap. Therefore, the size of the auscultation head should be based on clinical needs. The diameters of chest pieces of stethoscopes for adult use are normally between 45 and 50 mm.
